SEO pricing in New Zealand, explained plainly

How much SEO costs depends on how competitive your market is and how much work your website needs. Below is what the New Zealand market typically charges, how I price my own work, and how to tell whether a quote is worth it.

How I price SEO

Three ways to work together. Every engagement includes direct access to me, and none of them lock you in.

    • Competitor gap analysis
    • Google Business Profile review
    • Prioritised 180-day roadmap and a walkthrough call

What affects the cost of SEO

Two businesses in the same industry can need very different budgets. These five factors explain why.

How competitive your keywords are

Ranking for "plumber Auckland" (see SEO Auckland) takes more work than ranking for "plumber Whangārei" because more businesses are fighting for it and they've been investing for longer. The more established your competitors' websites are, the more content and authority you need to overtake them.

Your website's starting point

A fast, well-built site with good content needs refinement. A slow site with technical errors, thin pages or a history of spammy links needs repair before growth work can pay off.

Local or national reach

Local SEO for one area focuses on your Google Business Profile and a handful of service pages. Competing nationally, or across several cities, means more pages, more content and more links.

How much content you need

New service pages, location pages, product descriptions and articles are often the biggest part of the work. If your team can write some of it, the monthly cost comes down.

How fast you want to move

SEO compounds over time, but more work each month gets you there sooner. A higher investment early often makes sense for businesses entering a new market or recovering from a drop.

Is SEO worth the money? Work it out backwards

Start from what a customer is worth, not from what SEO costs. Here's a worked example for a trades business. Swap in your own numbers.

  • Extra enquiries a month from search10
  • Enquiries that become jobs30%
  • Average profit per job$1,500
  • Extra profit per month$4,500

In this example, three extra jobs a month cover a substantial monthly SEO investment with room to spare, and unlike paid ads, those rankings keep producing enquiries after the work is done. If the numbers don't stack up for your business, I'll tell you in the strategy call. Sometimes Google Ads or improving your Google Business Profile alone is the better first step.

The real cost of cheap SEO

A $199-a-month package isn't a bargain if it gets your site penalised.

At the low end of the market, the maths only works if almost no human time goes into your website. That usually means automated reports, bulk directory submissions, recycled content or links bought from networks that Google's spam policies specifically target.

The damage isn't always immediate. Rankings can climb for a few months before a core update or spam update wipes them out, and recovery takes longer and costs more than doing it properly the first time. I've been hired to clean up exactly this kind of work more than once.

Whoever you hire, ask three questions: who exactly will work on my site, what will you do in the first 90 days, and can I see the links you build? A good provider answers all three without hesitation.

SEO pricing questions

How much does SEO cost per month in New Zealand?

Most New Zealand SEO retainers fall between a few hundred and several thousand dollars a month. Local businesses in less competitive areas sit at the lower end; ecommerce stores and businesses competing nationally or in Auckland sit higher. Consultants and freelancers typically charge between $75 and $200 or more per hour.

Why is SEO charged monthly?

Because the work is ongoing. Competitors keep publishing, Google keeps updating, and authority is built gradually through content and links. A monthly fee lets the work compound. For businesses that only need a plan, a one-off audit is available.

Is there a minimum term or setup fee?

There's no lock-in contract. I recommend at least six months because that's how long it typically takes to see meaningful results, but you can cancel with reasonable notice. Any setup work is included in the first month's scope rather than charged separately.

Can I pay for SEO by the hour?

Yes, for consulting, training, second opinions and smaller technical jobs. For ongoing growth work, a fixed monthly fee is better value because it lets me plan and prioritise properly.

Is SEO cheaper than Google Ads?

Over time, usually yes. With Google Ads you pay for every click, and traffic stops when the budget does. SEO costs more up front in time but keeps producing traffic. Many businesses use both: ads for immediate leads while SEO builds, then shift budget as organic rankings take over.

What's included in a free strategy call?

A 30-minute video call where I review your current rankings and traffic, look at what your competitors are doing, and tell you what's realistic in the next 6 to 12 months. You leave with actionable recommendations whether or not we work together. Book a strategy call.
