SEO for roofers: more roofing jobs from Google, without paying per lead
When a roof leaks or a homeowner gets a re-roofing quote, they search Google and call one of the first three roofers they see. I help New Zealand roofing companies become one of those three, in the suburbs they want to work in, for the jobs they want more of.
How many people search for roofers in New Zealand?
Thousands, every month. And most of them are ready to book.
| Search term | Searches per month | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| roofers wellington | 880 | 35 |
| roofers auckland | 720 | 40 |
| roof repairs auckland | 720 | 45 |
| roof leak repair | 720 | 5 |
| roofers near me | 720 | 27 |
| roofers christchurch | 590 | 40 |
| longrun roofing | 480 | 16 |
| roofers hamilton | 390 | 37 |
| re roofing auckland | 320 | 14 |
| roof painting auckland | 320 | 8 |
| roofers tauranga | 320 | 38 |
| spouting repairs | 260 | 43 |
Look at the difficulty column. Searches like "roof leak repair", "roof painting auckland" and "re roofing auckland" are high-value jobs with low competition. Most roofing websites in New Zealand have a single "Services" page and nothing written specifically for these searches, which is why a focused roofer can overtake them within months.
Why roofers are moving away from paid lead sites
Shared leads, rising prices and customers who were never yours.
Lead marketplaces and directory sites can fill gaps, but the economics get worse over time. You pay for each lead, the same job often goes to several other roofers, and the customer remembers the platform rather than your business. When you stop paying, the work stops.
Ranking your own website and Google Business Profile works the other way round. The customer finds you directly, calls you and nobody else, and the rankings keep producing enquiries month after month. Every job you complete also becomes another review, project photo and page that makes the next ranking easier.
The goal isn't more traffic. It's a calendar full of the jobs you want, in the areas you want, at a price that doesn't come with a lead fee attached.
Four kinds of roofing searches, four kinds of pages
A homeowner with water coming through the ceiling searches differently from a property manager planning a re-roof. Your website needs to answer each one.
-
Urgent repairs
"Roof leak repair", "emergency roofer", "storm damage roof". These spike after heavy rain and wind. They need a fast-loading page with your phone number at the top and a clear promise about response times.
-
Planned projects
"Re-roofing", "new roof cost", "longrun roofing". Bigger jobs with longer research. These pages need materials, process, timeframes, rough cost guidance and photos of finished roofs.
-
Maintenance
"Roof painting", "spouting repairs", "moss removal". Lower-ticket work that often leads to the big job later. Low competition makes these quick wins.
-
Commercial
"Commercial roofing", "membrane roofing", "industrial roof repairs". Fewer searches, much larger contracts. These buyers want evidence: project case studies, capacity and compliance.
What I do for roofing companies
Roofing SEO is mostly local SEO, done thoroughly. This is where the time goes.
-
Google Business Profile
The right primary category, every roofing service listed, service areas matched to where you actually work, and a steady stream of job photos. For most roofers this is where the first new calls come from.
-
Service and location pages
A dedicated page for each job type, and location pages only where you have real projects and reviews to show. Each one written for homeowners, with materials, process and honest pricing guidance.
-
Project pages
Before-and-after photos, the suburb, the materials and the problem solved. Project pages prove local experience to Google and to the customer reading them, and they rank for long-tail searches on their own.
-
Trust signals
Your Licensed Building Practitioner details, industry memberships, manufacturer accreditations, warranties and insurance, presented clearly and marked up with schema. Roofing is a high-trust purchase and Google knows it.
-
Reviews
A simple after-job process that asks every happy customer for a Google review, ideally mentioning the job and the suburb. Recent, specific reviews are among the strongest map pack signals.
-
Speed and mobile
Most roofing searches happen on a phone, often in a hurry. I make sure your site loads fast on mobile data and that calling you takes one tap.
Quick check: is your roofing website holding you back?
If you can't tick most of the left column, there's work worth doing.
Signs you're set up to rank
- A separate page for each roofing service you offer
- Your phone number is clickable at the top of every page
- Real photos of your own completed roofs
- Over 20 Google reviews, with some from the last month
- Your business name, address and phone match everywhere online
Signs you're losing jobs
- One "Services" page listing everything
- Stock photos of roofs that aren't yours
- No mention of the suburbs you work in
- The site takes more than three seconds to load on a phone
- Your Google Business Profile hasn't been updated in months
Roofing SEO questions
How long does SEO take for a roofing company?
Google Business Profile improvements and quick-win pages for low-competition searches like roof painting or leak repairs can bring calls within weeks. Ranking for the main "roofers [city]" term typically takes 3 to 6 months in Wellington, Christchurch or Hamilton and longer in Auckland.
Can SEO replace the lead sites I'm paying for?
For many roofers, yes, over time. I usually suggest keeping paid lead sources running while SEO builds, then reducing them as organic calls grow. The difference is that SEO leads are yours alone and don't cost more as you get busier.
Do I need a separate page for every suburb?
No, and creating dozens of near-identical suburb pages can hurt you. Build location pages where you have genuine projects, photos and reviews from that area. Your Google Business Profile service area and your project pages do much of the local work.
Should I run Google Ads instead?
Ads bring calls immediately but stop when you stop paying, and roofing clicks in Auckland can cost several dollars each. SEO takes longer but keeps working. Many roofers run both: ads for urgent work now, SEO to reduce ad spend over time.
What does roofing SEO cost?
It depends on your area and how many services you want to rank for. A roofer targeting a few suburbs needs less than one competing across all of Auckland. See SEO pricing, or get a free audit and a fixed quote.
